Diablero - Old Shaggy
This is a personal project I had been wanting to create. I grew up in the late 90s and I remember those basic rock band videos where the entire clip was just the band playing, often in multiple frames, with all the energy coming from the rhythm and the band’s movement. It always amazed me how rhythm and framing alone could make something feel so dynamic.
So, I reached out to a local band I liked, and that’s how this project started. I grabbed my camera, took some reference photos of the band members, and began illustrating each one. You can see part of that process in a video at the bottom.
Once the illustrations were done, I separated the characters into pieces, including all the instruments. The next step was rigging: I created four different views of each character to add variation and flexibility to the frames. A glimpse of the rigging process is also shown in a video at the bottom.
With all the elements ready, I built a boardmatic to experiment with rhythm and framing. Once I found a flow I was happy with, I moved on to the heavy lifting—animating the whole piece.
